Glynis Hood

Growing up on the goldmines in South Africa led to a fascination in rocks and gold smelting. I graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring Geology and Geography.

Following this, I pursued my passion for rocks and gemstones and completed a Diploma in Gemmology through London.

I then moved to America with my family where I worked appraising gemstones and began creating jewellery.

In Australia, I commenced goldsmithing courses in 1996, finishing the vocational course at the Goldsmith School in 1998, followed by the ACE course in 2002.

I joined the Graceville Gallery in 2001 and have enjoyed the experience and journey immensely. The pleasure of making jewellery, someone buying it or on a commission, is so satisfying and rewarding.

In 2000 I won 2nd prize at the Maroochy Arts Festival. I was a finalist in the Memento Awards for two years running and I received a distinction for 'Pending Stories' in 2005. I created the Australian Masters Championship Women's Interstate Eight for Rowing trophy in 2006. This trophy will be carried down for many years to come.

I love all aspects of jewellery making from setting stones, to forging spoons and welcome every job with great enthusiasm. I work in 18ct Gold and Sterling Silver, creating a piece of jewellery from a bar or sheet of metal is exciting.
